Cleveland Facts

Sure our specialty is "garage doors", but we thought it might be nice to share a few facts about Cleveland:

  • Named Cleaveland after the leader of the city's first surveying party: Brigadier General Moses Cleaveland of the Connecticut militia.

  • Lorenzo Carter was the 1st resident; building a cabin along the Cuyahoga River.
  • Incorporated as a villiage on December 12, 1814. As a city in 1836.

  • The spelling of the city was changed in 1831 to "Cleveland" when the "a" was deleted to fit a headline in the local newspaper.

  • Standard Oil – which at one time was the largest oil refiner in the world , was founded in Cleveland in 1870 by the famous oil baron John D. Rockefeller. Remnants of the broken up company in 1911 are still present in Ohio: Marathon Oil (which also operates the Speedway brand), ExxonMobil  and Chevron.

  • Cleveland was the world's first city to be fully light by electricty in 1879.

  • Cleveland was the site of the world's first automatically operated, electricity generating wind turbine, built by Charles F. Brush in 1888. It measured 60 feet tall, weighed in at 4 tons and had a 12kw generator.

  • Euclid Avenue actually used to be called "Millionaire's Row" and was lined with beautiful mansions, even the home of John D. Rockafeller. Wow, how things have changed!

  • Cleveland lays claim to the first traffic light in America, beginning operation on Aug. 5, 1914.

  • The site of the first pedestrian button controling a traffic ligh was situated at the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue.

  • The Cuyahoga River - at one time considered the most polluted river in the US - in downtown Cleveland, has caught on fire over 10 times. The first occurance was in 1936 and the largest blaze in 1952, due to high volumes of petroleum waste. The latest and most famous fire was in 1969 - spurring the Clean Water Act, Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

  • In 1998, the Cuyahoga River was designated as one of 14 American Heritage Rivers in the US.

  • Cleveland ranked (2008) as the 7th most dangerous city in the US with a population of 100,000 to 500,000 and the 11th most dangerous overall. Think you need more security?
